Caption : Gowri of Theertham village in Krishnagiri district who got married in a very young age seen with her husband Muniswamy at her house. The practice of child marriage still continues in remote villages of Krishnagiri resulting in high birth rate. Because of the declining female sex ratio in a majority of the villages, girls are married once they become adolescent. Though child marriage is illegal, no complaints are filed. Illiteracy and lack of awareness is the major reason for child marriage. Owing to socio-economic conditions, parents consider girl children as a burden and marry them off at a young age. These children develop immunological disorders and teenage pregnancies.
