VICTORIAL MEMORIAL HALL

Image ID: 3912496

Caption : A view of Victoria MEMORIAL HALL from the Race Course in Kolkata. The structure was built out of contributions from a MEMORIAL fund, instituted in 1901after the death of Queen Victoria. Before the present structure came up, there was "Marlborough House'' at the spot, and the Government purchased the entire site, measuring a little over four acres, for Rs.10,000 in 1905. A year later, the Prince of Wales, George Frederick Ernest Albert, laid the foundation stone and the MEMORIAL HALL came up in 1909 when Sir Arthur Lawley, the then Governor of Madras, declared it open. A pink sandstone structure with marble flooring, the building has smooth flowing front arches, which were built in the Islamic pattern. The stylised motifs in the arches resemble those in the Hindu forts and temples seen in Rajasthan, with Gothic architecture employed in shaping the arches in windows and pillars. Till the early 1940s, the building functioned as the headquarters of the Victoria Technical Institute. In 1942, the Army took over the building for its use. After World War-II, the Government decided to use the building to house an Art Gallery. In November 1951, the then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, opened the National Art Gallery as part of the centenary celebration of the Government Museum. The gallery exhibits 16th-18th Century Rajput and Mughal paintings and Ravi Varma's works. Also on display are life-size portraits of the British Governors of Madras and the Governor's coach, used for important occasions. Photo: N. Sridharan 30-11-2004
