Caption : BENGALURU KARNATAKA 27/07/2022 : School students going through the exhibits displayed at Seeds of Culture - a travelling exhibition, on the occasion of 57th anniversary of Visvesvaraya Industrial and Technological Museum (VITM), in Collaboration with The National Centre for Biological Sciences (NCBS-TIFR), in Bengaluru on July 27, 2022. The exhibition influences Indian traditional knowledge in botany and medicine in the global context. India is considered as the heartland of Spices. Since the first millennium AD trade routes by land and sea connected India, Arabia, East Africa and South East Asia for trading commodities like spices, medicines, cosmetics, perfumes and plant dyes like Indigo. Spices were used as medicine during the plague pandemic in Europe in the 17th century. Indian knowledge acquisition by Europeans is highlighted in this exhibition is Hortus Indicus Malabaricus, a work compiled by Hendrik Van Rheede of the Dutch colony in Kochi with knowledge provided by Malabar traditional medical scholars, and published in Amsterdam during the second half of the 17th century. In the exhibition one can experience playing Indian traditional games using seeds, get a Fabric dyed using indigo, digitally flip through the Hortus Malabaricus and take a walk through the Spice garden and have a look at the Spice plants like ginger, turmeric, paper and Cardamom which originated in India. The exhibition also contains overviews of evolution of plant forms, adaptations of plants in various bio-geographic zones and phytochemicals of plants and the importance of plants in everyday life using various interactives. Seed embedded in human culture as food, spices, and also as medicines, jewellery and to play games. The exhibition is set up in an area of 300 sq. metres on the third floor of the Museum and will be displayed for 6 months. Photo MURALI KUMAR K / The Hindu
