Caption : KOCHI,15/10/2012.Fishermen engaged in fishing in a river near Kochi. The 43 rivers flowing across the state are dangerously polluted with high levels of pesticides like DDT and endosulfan. This was found in the latest study authorised by the state government and conducted by the Salim Ali Centre for Ornithology and Natural History (SACON).The Kerala Bodiversity Board had entrusted SACON to conduct the study to assess the presence of pesticides and other harmful toxins in the rivers. Of the 44 rivers, SACON did not analyse the waters of a small river, Chitturpuzha, in Palakkad. A shocking finding of the study is that all the 159 fish samples taken for analysis from the rivers contained toxic elements, including DDT and endosulfan.
