WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY

Image ID: 109041083

Caption : Visakhapatnam:04/06/2009: A patch of the hillock burnt for podu cultivation, known as jhumming in tribal parlance at Killomkota, a remote area infested by Maoists in G. Madugula mandal of Visakhapatnam district. The cultivation is done by burning trees, raising new crop and later shifting to another area. Podu cultivation has resulted in severe degrading of forest cover in the Eastern Ghats. June 5 is observed as World Environment Day.---Photo:K.R. Deepak
