Goats searching for grass in a dry area in Japowbari village in Sonitpur district of Assam about 300 km away from Guwahati city on Saturday, March 21, 2009. Prolonged dry spell in northeast India which has not witnessed a shower for several months has made life miserable for the farmers as well as the people. Because of dry spell and poor irrigation system a large number of crop fields have dried up through out northeast region. The Assam state has witnessed 82 per cent deficit rainfall this Rabi season, as, against the normal of 110.3 mm, the State has received only 19.5 mm of rainfall this time.
