Pandit Vishwa Mohan Bhatt is a renowned Hindustani classical musician who lives in Jaipur. Pandit Ji, as he is known to his ardent admirers, is the creator of Mohan Veena. Always interested in experimenting, he was not satisfied with learning how to play standard instruments such as the sitar and sarod. He created the original Mohan veena by modifying a Western acoustic guitar. He changed the strings and added more. The Mohan veena has 19 strings. Of these, three are for melody, and four are drone strings, 12 sympathetic strings run below the melody and drone strings. These add to the instrument's resonance and volume. Three types of wood are used in making the instrument. The top is made of spruce; the back, sides and neck are of mahogany, and the fingerboard is of rosewood. The Mohan veena is held on the lap while playing. Vishwa Mohan Bhatt, the first Indian musician to win a Grammy Award, has many disciples who play the Mohan veena.
