Caption : GUWAHATI, 05/06/2008 : MARRING BIRD LIFE: A Greater Adjutant Stork searches for food in a garbage dumping site near the Deepor Beel Bird Sanctuary in Guwahati on TJune 05, 2008. Everyday, more than 50 trucks dump garbage, polluting the water in the sanctuary. Repeated protests by environmentalists, NGOs and nature lovers, have failed to dissuade the Guwahati Municipal Corporation. The sanctuary has been selected as one of the Important Bird Area sites by Birdlife International and it is the only Ramsar Site in Assam. The Ramsar Convention is an international treaty for the conservation and sustainable utilisation of wetlands.
